The Chapter Leader of the Year Award recognizes an individual who demonstrates significant leadership, extraordinary contributions to HIMSS Chapters, the society and a commitment to the healthcare management systems/IT industry. Barry satisfied the requirements for this award through his 37+ years serving HIMSS and the hospital management systems profession.
His chapter leadership experience includes forming and serving as first president of both the New York and Dairyland Chapters. As a member of the Advisory Council of the graduate Health Management Systems program at Duquesne University, he, with faculty and students, developed the first student chapter of HIMSS in 1996. With this background, he accepted the challenge to lead WPHIMSS when the Chapter Board was advised that the then president was resigning immediately in mid-term. There were many challenges to help resuscitate our chapter. As of July 2008, he serves on the Board in an advisory role to ensure a smooth leadership transition and to guide in achieving WPHIMSS’ goals.
Concurrent with his leading WPHIMSS, Barry led the HIMSS legacy initiative to tell our Society’s saga. As a result, chapters are documenting their own legacies and Barry prepared the WPHIMSS history and provided early history information for the New York and Dairyland Chapters.
Together with the WPHIMSS Board of Directors, committees and members, Barry was able to grow the chapter and help it sustain in the future. As a result, the chapter was recognized by receiving the 2007 Chapters Innovation Award, the June 2008 Spirit of HIMSS Award (for the successful Pennsylvania Advocacy Day in collaboration with the Delaware Valley Chapter), and the SharePoint Contest Award (best practices in using the chapter’s SharePoint portal.
The Founders Leadership Award is presented to one or more individuals who, in the judgment of the HIMSS Board of Directors, has/have demonstrated significant leadership within the Society and/or the industry. Barry has served in many HIMSS leadership roles since founding and serving as the first president of the Dairyland (Wisconsin) Chapter in 1978 through his recent leading the Life Members’ Legacy Workgroup and serving as president of WPHIMSS. In between, he served as the 1984 HIMSS President/Chairman of the Board, president of two other chapters, and had leadership roles on HIMSS committees.
Factors for his receiving this award include:
As Society President/Chairman-Elect in 1983, he developed the Society’s first strategic plan which included:
- Introducing IT as a new constituency
- Advocating to others to recognize HMSS as a driver to improve healthcare management systems
- Introducing a member recognition/advancement program for service to the Society (i.e., Fellows and Senior Member), and
- Introducing a student scholarship program to help HMSS grow into the future.
As 1984 HMSS President/Chairman, Barry implemented the first year’s activities of the strategic plan. He appointed the first Fellows Chair, implemented the Society’s first scholarship (the Richard P. Covert Scholarship), and published on behalf of HMSS. As HIMSS President/Board Chairman, he was honored by DVHIMSS for his efforts to reach symbiosis between HIMSS and affiliated chapters.
Barry espoused relationship building with other organizations to strengthen the Society; thus, as Immediate Past-President, he represented HMSS on the American Hospital Association’s Personal Membership Committee (to provide input in AHA policy from a HMSS perspective). He also represented HMSS on the ACHE’s Examination Confederation. In 1986, he served as Fellows Chair.
Realizing a need to bridge generations among HIMSS members, he served as Legacy Workgroup Chair which developed the HIMSS History Wall (unveiled at HIMSS07) and the published history.
